The word
"CAJON"
is Spanish for
"BIG BOX".
It originated in Peru, where African slaves wher not permitted to play their drums as a means of stifling there culture. So they played whatever they could get their hands. Boxes were easier to come by than drums, so that's what they used to make their drum music.
My version has a thin membrane of plywood on the front surface with a snare arrangement behind it. On the side is a slit drum as well.
It can be easily miked by means of the hole in the back. It only takes one mic inside to sound like a whole drum kit. My CAJONS sell for around $200 and are made of solid cypress.
